London and New York share energy, scale and excellent public transport, but the rhythm of a successful visit is different in each city.
When to go
April to June and September to October offer good walking weather on both sides of the Atlantic.
A route that works
- Give each city at least four full days, not counting the overnight flight.
- Group London days by east, west and central neighbourhoods rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
- In New York, plan one anchor reservation per day and leave room to explore nearby streets, parks and food.
Where to base yourself
Stay near a direct Underground or subway line, not necessarily beside the most famous landmark.
Getting around
Book the open-jaw flight before hotels. Use contactless transit in London and OMNY in New York.
Food and reservations
Tipping expectations differ sharply. Build New York restaurant gratuities into the budget; service is generally included in UK menu pricing only when stated.
Practical note: Jet lag is easier when the first afternoon is outdoors. Avoid expensive, non-refundable plans immediately after arrival.
Details were checked for publication, but transport schedules and opening hours can change. Confirm important arrangements directly before travelling.
